Sexuality Department
After 11 years in existence, the ANU Sexuality Department is more versatile than ever before; playing vital roles both in and outside of the university. The department is run by the Queer Collective with its head as the Sexuality officer and any student identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered/sexual, intersex or queer identifying is automatically part of this collective and able to participate and vote in meetings.
'But what does that mean, exactly?' I hear some of you ask. The Sexuality Department has played many roles including student advocacy to fight homophobia within the university, most notably through the Sexuality Contact Officer Network (SCO) and Sexually Transmittable Infections (STI’s) and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, through its longstanding ties with the AIDS Action Council and Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT (SHFPACT).
But, the department is more than this; it’s a place where Queers can come together and work to find solutions to problems that we as students have. For some this may mean fighting homophobia, but for others this may mean just surviving and learning to live; university after all is the place to come and find out and be who you are.
There are of course lots of events held through the year; Queer collective meetings, O-week events including the 'Anything Goes' dance party and Queer Brunch, bisexuality day, Queer Collaborations - this year in Perth - and who could forget Pride Week in May! So get involved, come along to a meeting and see what’s going on. Though, if that’s all a little too much for you come and check out the department in the Students' Association and have a chat (above the Commonwealth Bank in Union Court) OR the Hue Depot (The Queer Space) on the lower level of the Crisp Building, Kingsley Street side.
The Hue Depot (Queer Space)
The Queer Space, otherwise known as the Hue Depot is a place where Queers can go and leave behind prejudice and intolerance. It is open to all peoples that identify as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgendered/sexual, intersex and queer students and is run by the Sexuality Department. The Hue Depot is also a great place to go and chat, read, check your e-mail, watch some TV, heat up your lunch or just lounge around in between lectures and have a cup of tea.
The Hue Depot now also has swipe card access, so if you wish to obtain entry, you will have to e-mail your student number to the Sexuality Department: sexdep@anu.edu.au. No name is required and there is complete confidentiality involved. The Queer Space is located on the lower level of the Crisp Building, facing towards the Crisp Annex and Kingsley Street.
