Clubs and Societies

Clubs and societies are one of the highlights of campus life. You can meet new friends. You can get involved. You can learn new skills. You can do stuff at highly subsidised rates which you could not otherwise afford. And you can have a lot of fun doing all this.

Clubs and societies are funded through ANUSA, their own fund raising activities and sometimes sponsorship. Most Clubs & Socs have a small joining fee, which is usually discounted if you are a student. And some clubs are even open to members outside the ANU community.

There are clubs and societies catering to all interests and persuasions. There are faculty-based clubs so you can meet other people doing your course. There are debating, public speaking and networking clubs, so you can improve your communication skills and articulate your opinion of the day. There are political clubs so you can change the world or at least activate for change. There are all manner of sporting clubs, from the conventional sports to the more unusual. Rock climbing? Night-time mountain bike riding? Scuba? Tai Bo? There are also choirs, wargames and religious societies… And much much more.

And if that isn’t enough, you can start your own club or society.

What are C&S?

Clubs & societies are formed by students and are open to all students. They usually focus on some interest-group, such as a language, activity, religion or study-area. The C&S are affiliated to the ANUSA, which means they are covered by our public liability and can apply to us for funding.

How can I join one? Does it cost money?

Come to the SA building and look at our list of C&S. To join you can contact the executive of the club or society, or just go along to one of their events and join up there. Some C&S charge a membership fee (anything from $2 to $50 depending on what activities are involved). Others have free membership. It’s best to just ask the club or society directly.
