How To Get Involved
Run for Election
For some students, election week is the most dreaded week of the year. A casual walk through Union Court becomes more like running the gauntlet, with advances from budding student politicians coming at you from every angle. However we firmly believe it is the most important week of the year form ANU Students (well, maybe after O Week…), this is the week when the ANU chooses which lucky students will represent it to the University, to the government, to the public. Student election week is held in third term each year and elects 38 members of ANUSA plus Woroni editors. Nominations open several weeks before the election, and nomination forms are located in the ANUSA office.
There are also a number of positions which are elected at ANUSA meetings throughout the year. These include O-Week and Bush-Week director(s), Grants and Affiliations rep, Probity Officer(s), Disputes Committee Members(s), Diary Editor and editors of other publications (including Survival Guide and Alternative Course Guide).
Any undergraduate student can stand for an elected ANUSA position. The General Secretary of the Association is responsible for election issues. 2009’s Gen Sec, Michael Wright, can be contacted at sa.gensec@anu.edu.au with any inquires or to express interest in an ANUSA position.
Become an ANUSA Volunteer
However you do not have to be an elected representative to get involved with ANUSA. Throughout the year ANUSA has countless volunteers who help out in various areas.
For example, during O Week and Bush Week we need a strong team of enthusiastic volunteers to help make them successful. If you are interested in becoming a Bush Week volunteer for 2009, or an O Week volunteer for 2010, or indeed interested in volunteering at the many other social events we run throughout the year including our now famous ‘ANUSA in the Court' days, email our social officer Meg O'Connell at sa.social@anu.edu.au.
Come along to our meetings
Finally, a really great way to get involved is to come along to our meetings. ANUSA holds four different types of councils. Student Representative Council (SRC), College Representative Council (CRC), Joint Representative Council (CRC) and General Meetings (Four Ordinary General Meetings and one Annual General Meeting).
Anyone can attend an ANUSA meeting. At SRC, CRC and JRC, only elected representative have voting rights, but all attendees have the right to speak and move motions. At OGM’s and AGM’s, every student can vote, speak and move motions.
Write for WORONI
Woroni is the official publication of ANUSA. It is printed on a fortnightly basis during teaching periods and its editors are always looking for a good story or interesting scoop to include. If you have something to say, why not contact the Editors, Jess Lee and James Dawson, at woroni@anu.edu.au, or check out the website atwww.woroni.com.au.
Contact us with your own ideas and initiatives
Although we try our very hardest, we can’t think of everything, so ANUSA is always keen to hear ideas from students about how we can make your ANU experience better. It may be an idea for a social event, an issue you would like us to lobby the University on, or an area where you would like to see ANUSA more active. Send us an email or drop into our offices and tell us you ideas! ANUSA President, Sham Sara, and Vice-President, Tom Galvin, can be contacted at sa.president@anu.edu.au andsa.vicepres@anu.edu.au respectively, and are eagerly awaiting your ideas!
